On Saturday 23rd October 2022, 25 Shetland ponies and their owners braved the autumnal weather to meet two of Scotland’s most famous equine statues.
The Little and Large Sponsored Walk was organised by the Central Scotland Shetland Pony Group and saw Shetland pony owners from across Central Scotland take part to raise money for two charities close to their hearts; Prostate Cancer UK in memory of the late Ken Scott who was a founder member of the group, and the Equine Grass Sickness Fund.
This extraordinary walk was a 5km route around the Helix Park in Falkirk with the half way point being a spectacular meeting of “Little and Large” as the Shetlands came face to face with Barn and Duke – The Kelpies.
This is the second time that the walk has been organised. The first was back in 2015 and was a great success. Ken himself took part and thoroughly enjoyed it. The CSSPG had tried to arrange the event a few years following Ken’s death but for various reasons were unable to. COVID then meant everything was delayed again. When the second walk was discussed with Ken’s wife, Anne, she was delighted it was taking part at the Kelpies again as remembered the first walk so fondly. This time round the charities were chosen in memory of Ken who died of Prostate Cancer back in 2017 and the Equine Grass Sickness Fund in memory of loved ponies who had died to this terrible illness.
An appeal for walkers was then put out through the CSSPG Facebook page and before long there had been a number of people in contact saying that they were interested in taking part. The walk was open to anyone with a Shetland pony and saw people travel from as far as the Scottish Borders to take part.
On the day of the walk the majority of Central Scotland was wet and miserable but by 1.30pm in Falkirk the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to shine. There was a definite buzz as the walkers got the ponies ready. Everyone had made an effort to wear bright colours. Some ponies were even in fancy dress. At 2pm, with collection buckets in hand, the colourful entourage started their walk to the Kelpies. As they entered the Helix Park they were met by members of the public who were enjoying their day at the park and offered the walkers some much needed encouragement; after all they do only have small legs.
As the half way point was reached, everyone’s efforts were rewarded by the spectacular sight of 25 beautiful Shetlands standing in front of the iconic Kelpies. What a spectacular and unique photo opportunity had been created and everyone was taking advantage of it. There were a number of interesting “Kelpie Selfies” being taken much to the bemusement of the Shetlands themselves.
After all the photos were taken, the walk made its way back through the park to the starting point where, once all the ponies were sorted, everyone enjoyed a much needed hot drink, cake and of course an exchange of views as to how the day had gone.
Everyone really seemed to enjoy the day, especially the social aspect of it. There was so much laughter and sharing of stories, which is often not experienced at shows. There was no pressure, just an expectation to have fun. Ken was very much in everyone’s thoughts especially given that the last pony he ever bred, Kerryston Elsa, took part. The amazing sum of over £2300 has been raised so far in his memory.

The annual Lerwick Pony Sale was held on Friday 7th October at the Shetland Rural Centre. After a 2 year break, the PBSA were delighted that the Sale Show could go ahead on the Thursday evening. Thanks must go to Mr Ian Spence who travelled up to judge at the show. An array of sizes and colours were forward to suit a range of buyers, with ponies being very well presented and of a high quality overall.
Yet again the online bidding facility proved invaluable with a large percentage being sold online, combined with a full ringside of keen bidders prices were good, particularly for good quality, well presented ponies. The sale was watched worldwide through the online bidding facility. The PBSA must express thanks to the vendors who provided numerous photographs and videos of the lots in advance of the sale, allowing for the ponies and the sale as a whole to be promoted greatly in the lead up to the day.
Much to the relief of SLMG staff and the PBSA, all ponies due to be shipped made it safely on the ferry on Friday night, despite the unsettled weather leading up to the sale day.
The top price of the day went to the Champion, a lovely miniature chestnut mare Glenbogie Fairytale from Carole Laignel who sold for 2500gns. Reserve Show Champion was the 3year old miniature chestnut filly exhibited by Lynn Johnson; Hjaltland Berry who sold for 2250gns. Best Overall Foal was Filska Victory who sold for 280gns.

President’s Report – July 2022
Dear Members,
To my horror I have just realised that I hadn’t done my President’s Report following our Council meeting in July. It is perhaps a symptom of just how busy life has become now we are, god willing, post pandemic.
I am glad to say we were able to hold our July meeting in person at Shetland house. It was good to catch up with the office staff and have some time to spend with them. Office stalwart Kate Forret is sadly, for us not her, retiring on 31st August 2022. She will be very much missed by everyone especially her encyclopaedic knowledge of pedigrees. We wish her a long, healthy and happy retirement.
It was also good to meet up with my fellow council members again at what was a rather jam packed meeting. I think everyone was quite exhausted afterwards and I would like to thank the council members for their time, effort and involvement. It is important to remember that anyone serving on council does so in a voluntary capacity and at their own expense which is a considerable commitment but just demonstrates the strength of feeling for our fantastic pony.
As I write this update I am preparing to leave Shetland on the ferry to travel down to Builth Wells for the AGM and 39th Annual Breed Show. Huge thanks to Nick true and his team for organising it. Shetland seems to have avoided all of the recent heatwaves and pretty much summer in general so I am hopeful Wales will be a bit warmer than it currently is at home. I am really looking forward to meeting members and seeing a lot of fantastic Shetland Ponies and of course good luck to all those exhibiting.
The new website is nearing completion so hopefully this will be launched in the near future and will be much more user friendly.
By way of a reminder regarding hair samples for DNA testing, the lab, Weatherbys, is advising that at least 40-60 hairs are plucked (NOT CUT) from the mane or the top of the tail. It is vital that a good sample with good hair follicles is taken to ensure the sample can be processed and avoid delays.
The next edition of the society magazine will be out in late autumn so if anyone has any articles or wishes to take out an advert please contact the office to make arrangements. We are always happy to have member’s photos to include. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the competition in the spring magazine to win a copy of Catherine Munro’s book “Ponies at the Edge of the World”, entries of a Shetland Pony themed poem must be received in the office by the end of September.
The Seminar for Panel and Trainee Judges planned for September at Buckhurst Park in Sussex, has been postponed due to circumstances out with our control. This will be rescheduled to late February/early March 2023. From 1st January 2023 it will be a requirement for panel judges, wishing to remain on our panel, to attend at least one continuing professional development (CPD) event every three years.
Naturally thoughts are now turning to autumn and the upcoming pony sales, which I hope will be a huge success. Entries have been coming in steadily for the Lerwick Sale and it looks like there will be a good selection of quality ponies forward. I hope the same will be the case for Aberdeen and Worcester. It is important for breeders to support these sales as without entries they will be lost.
With Very Best wishes
Roselyn Fraser

New pony attraction entertains families this Summer in Bedfordshire
A new attraction taking place in Bedfordshire this Summer is charming families by the droves… and best of all, it’s completely free!
In celebration of the upcoming Therapy Pony Centre, launching later this year, Keysoe International is hosting ‘Meet & Greet’ sessions with the therapists in training – a group of 10 miniature Shetland ponies.
All are welcome, and entrance to the sessions are completely free, taking place just outside the Keysoe Café veranda in the main arena.
As well as meeting, stroking and walking the Shetlands, visitors can expect to learn more about the benefits of animal therapy and all about the different personalities of the ponies.
Hot and cold beverages, sandwiches and ice creams are available from the Keysoe Café, where children will also find colour in pony-related activity sheets specially designed for the centre.
Keysoe International – a newly refurbished equestrian centre, café, restaurant, bar complex off the B660 – hosts a range of events throughout the year, almost all of which are open to the public and free to attend. Regular events include International Show Jumping, Dressage and Para-Dressage competitions. Visit their website for more information: www.keysoe.com.
Equine therapy is a form of holistic treatment that focuses on promoting physical and mental wellbeing through working in collaboration with horses. Once launched, the Keysoe Cuddle Therapy Centre will be a central hub where guests can come to learn and experience the beneficial calming effects of working with animals.
The Shetland ponies and their carers are also in training to offer site visits outside of their home, including hospitals, care homes and hospices.

Royal Norfolk show Wednesday 29th June
Judge Mr R Miller
What a beautiful day for a very early start, for the return of the Royal Norfolk show after its two year break. It was good to see the new miniature classes well supported by the East Anglian Shetland Pony Group members as well competitors from afar. Kicking the day off was the miniature mare with Sheila James, Rodhams Pocket Rocket heading a strong line up. Miniature stallions up next and it was Brackenlea Krusader, Jill Needham’s lovely young stallion.
Moving on to the miniature yearling and it was Catherine Price-Williams homebred filly Fenlandrose Chia. The miniature 2 and 3 year old class saw Becca Ellis, Stunning filly Merrylees Covergirl. Last class for the miniatures was the gelding any age with the handsome Markisal Maxamillion taking the top spot for Julie Land.
It was then time for the miniature Championship a very strong line which saw Jill Needham’s beautiful piebald stallion pulled forward to take the crown with Rodhams Pocket rocket in reserve.
Mr Miller then moved straight on to the standard section which was well supported and lovely quality shetlands. The standard mare was first up and it saw Sally Buckley beautiful bay mare Sharptor Bellevue pulled in the top spot. Unfortunately no standard stallion forward so straight on to the yearlings where Sonia Chenery’s homebred colt Hodeam Archer continuing his winning streak. Over to the 2 and 3 year olds and that saw the lovely young colt Drumnagair Ben Mac Dui winning the class for Rachel Hodson. Geldings were last up again with Julia Prentices driving Shetland Red Indian of Catchpool claiming the top spot. It was then over to the standard championship which was a strong line up and it was Sally Buckley and her Young mare Sharptor Bellevue taking the top honours in the standard section with Drumnagair Ben Mac dui reserve.
It was then time for the standard and miniature champions to return, it was Jill Needham pulled forward to stand overall Shetland champion at the Royal Norfolk show with Brackenlea Krusader a very worthy winner. Sharptor Bellevue closely followed in the reserve overall spot.
It was lovely to back at the Royal Norfolk Show.

East Anglian Shetland Pony Group Spring Show
After two years we finally got to host our spring show and what was even better perfect weather! We were all set for what was a lovely busy show with over 140 entries across the two rings. Although entries were low in the young stock section Mr & Mrs James we delighted with the amount of ponies they had present. Mrs James taking the morning In hand classes where she took Jill Needham 2 year old miniature colt Toplarch Paddington as her Junior Champion with Tara Buckley and her standard black gelding Sharptor Adonis Reserve. While outside in the sunshine Mr James took the ridden classes which were well support with a lovely big lead rein class that Eliza Cowell and her black gelding Ulverscroft Harvest Buzzard won. We had the addition of some new ridden classes where Suellen Graves on Buxted Hi Felicity won the best turned out. He found his Champion from the winner of the open & novice ridden, Ottilie Willis on Giersbergs Justify and his Reserve Ridden Champion was Eliza Cowell on Ulverscroft Harvest Buzzard. After lunch we had a change of judges so Mrs James went out in the sunshine to oversee the fun and gymkhana which were great fun and lots of laughs and sweetie cones for everyone. Mr James was then taking over the in hand classes where he started off with the miniatures over 4 section, with Bwlchclawdd Little lady winning the Mini mare, Jill Needham’s Brackenlea Krusader the mini stallion and Julie’s lands Markisal Maxamillion the mini gelding. He then took Julie Lands, Bwlchclawdd Little Lady Miniature Champion and Brackenlea Krusader in the Reserve spot. Then he was on to the standards with Lorraine Benthams, Melland Queen of Scot’s winning the mare class and Sharptor Arion owned by Gary Davi’s-Moull the gelding class. He then moved on to the Standard Championship where the winner of home and island bred & solid colour was Marilyn Parkers bay mare Hackamore Poetic Justice who claimed victory with Melland Queen of Scot’s in Reserve. With only a couple of classes left to judge one of which was veteran saw Rebecca Ellis and her miniature stallion Brandeston Limerick win a large veteran class. Then time for the last of inhand championship where he was joined by his wife to judge the Senior Championship, which saw Hackamore poetic Justice owned and bred by Marilyn Parker take Senior Champion, with Julie Lands miniature mare Bwlchclawdd Little Lady in the Reserve spot. Then for the main event the BEST IN SHOW where the ridden champion had been patiently waiting, Mr & Mrs James then crowned Hackamore Poetic Justice as best in show to the delight of her breeder and owner Marilyn Parker. With Julie Lands, Bwlchclawdd Little lady in Reserve spot much to her delight. We would like to thank all of you who attended our show and made the day truly brilliant we can’t wait to see you all again at our very special 25th anniversary show on Sunday 25th September.

Cranford Fireman, bred by Gerry Hart, now with Mandy Shepherd and daughter Bea, who produces him. Turns out he loves jumping. He super athletic, scopey and getting braver every time out. We love him to bits and I think he’s going to be the next Carmilo Magician.
Pic shows – Fireman winning this class – BSPS Area 13b. Eleonora Ljungman is the jockey. She was also 2nd in the novice fr.
GH replies, Mandy, if he comes anywhere near ‘Magician’ he’ll be fabulous.
