The Central Scotland Shetland Pony Group – Youngstock Show 2024
Our final show of the year went ahead on a cold but thankfully dry day at the Caledonian Mart, Stirling. Mrs Joy Barugh presided over the rings and it was the Eynhallow Stud’s yearling filly, Eynhallow Dutch Fara who came to the fore. A multiple winner throughout the year, Dutch Fara collected the Standard Black Championship on her way to the Supreme accolade. Reserve Supreme went to the Miniature Champion which was Lynda Cochranes big winning bay 2yo filly, Abbeygreen Verona. This young filly has picked up the top award at both the Highland Show and the Great Yorkshire Show amongst many other wins to her name.
Reserve Champion in the Standard Black Section was Amy McConville’s Baldinnie Vanilla Sunrise, a homebred 2yo gelding. Reserve in the Miniature section was another homebred. This was Matthew Davidson’s Chesterwood Alexis Rose. A delightful 2yo chestnut filly she was adding to her string of championship places throughout the year.
In the Coloured Section is was a pair of gingers who topped the bill. Eileen Carlyle’s 3yo colt, Dryfesdale Desirable took the class and the Championship win over his paternal half brother of the same age, Dryfesdale Dempsey – now owned by M&E Warren.
The Young Handler Section provided one final fling for Callum Dow. This is his last show as a Young Handler as he will be out of the classes next year and what better way to go than to go out with a bang! Callum was very kindly lent Baldinnie Vanilla Sunrise from Amy McConville to claim the Championship. Reserve was Bryony Mackinnon leading Piccadilly of Endrick.
That’s all our shows over with for this year. We look forward to our AGM next weekend and then some quiet time over the winter.

The Scottish Shetland Pony Championship Show 2024
The 8th of September saw over 100 different Shetland ponies descend upon Howe for The Scottish Shetland Pony Championship Show. The show has unofficially become known as the season finale for the adult ponies before their winter breaks and the youngstock shows take over.
It was certainly a day for the Geldings with them picking up sashes left right and centre. Our Supreme of Show was once again won by a performance pony. Schivas Kevin and Molly Fenton stole everyone’s hearts with foot perfect displays all day to win their ridden classes and championship before going on to win the ultimate accolade of the day. Reserve to Kevin in the Ridden ring was the ever consistent chestnut gelding Kingswells Glen Dronach.
The Reserve Supreme went the way of Ian Spence and Joy Wilde’s bay filly foal Burnbank Destiny. On route to the Reserve title this stunning May born filly foal went through the Coloured card picking up her class win, Junior Champion, Overall Coloured Champion, the Foal Championship AND the Overall Junior Championship. It’s a good job the sashes and rosettes were opted to be held by her handlers as you wouldn’t have been able to see the pony underneath it all!
The Black ring, officiated by Mrs E Carlyle, saw fierce competition between local family owned studs with the Mawburn Stud’s 5yo Mare Mawburn Sadie lift the top honours with her regular handler, Maggie Stuart. Taking the Reserve Sash in the Black section was the previous Breed Show Supreme Champion, Strauss of Auckhorn. Not content with just that Strauss was also the Gelding Champion and the Veteran Champion. Not to be outdone Donna Lochtie’s Glendyburn Stud picked up the Black Junior Championship with Glendyburn Lady Devine. Reserve to Devine was another Gelding this time in the shape of Amy McConville’s 2yo Baldinnie Vanilla Sunrise.
In the Miniature ring David Hodge was faced with a mammoth task of sorting over 60 ponies. Top spot in this ring went to Leslie James’s piebald gelding Snelsmore Wizard. The Junior Champion from this ring went on to stand Reserve Overall Junior and that was the lovely dun 2yo filly Kinnochtry Minnie Mouse. She is the first homebred for Claire Andrews and has given her plenty of success in the ring since she was a foal. Picking up the Reserve as well as the Reserve Broken Coloured Championship place was Fiona Johnstone’s homebred yearling Glenord Thistlewit. Taking the Senior Miniature sash was Matthew Davidson & Lisa Wilson’s beautifully bay stallion Lignite Chickadee.
As ever the Young Handler’s were out in force. Last years Champion, Rory Andrews, had to settle for Reserve this year to the ever consistent Anna Marshall. Anna is a very multi-talented lass. She does everything from showing Shetlands, ODE’s on her connemara pony to playing the drums in the school’s pipe band.
If you would like to join us next year the show will be on Sunday 14th September at Howe EC in Fife. There are classes for all including urnregistered ponies, fancy dress and driven ponies. We also have the M&M ring outside that shetlands are welcome to enter with Breed society rosettes for all breeds and NPS Silver Medals up for grabs

We had our summer show on Saturday 17th August with the wonderful Ochil Hills as the backdrop. There were bumper entries across the Miniature section which was presided over by Miss Emma Gibson. She found her Overall Champion in Adele Stewart’s 14yo Chestnut yeld mare Narinian Lottie. Lottie went on to win the Group of 3 ponies with her daughter, Elcho Lily, and her half sister Narinian Cuckoo before claiming the Overall Reserve Supreme sash. Reserve in the Miniature section was the Alichbrae Stud’s homebred 3yo filly Alichbrae Roxy. A few weeks prior Roxy had been Miniature Junior Champion and Reserve Overall Miniature Champion at Braco Show. Alichbrae Stud’s success did not end there. Their 2yo Colt, Alichbrae Euphoria, stood Reserve Overall Miniature Junior Champion (to Roxy) and picked up the Novice Junior and Overall Novice Miniature Championships on route.
Over in the Coloured ring there was quality over quantity, Miss Di Johnson oversaw this ring.. The Endrick Stud’s 4yo grey mare, Endrick Mayfair was Novice Champion. The Open section was almost a clean sweep for the bay’s with the Mawcarse Stud’s Kingsacre Rejoice taking top honours. A delightful 4yo mare by Buxted Minstrel, Rejoice was a prolific winner in her junior years. Reserve Overall Coloured and picking up the Junior Championships along the way was Amy McConville’s homebred bay 2yo filly Baldinnie Patience Is A Virtue. She is well named as she was the first filly to be born under the Baldinnie prefix after a string of colts. Virtue went on to be Reserve Overall Junior Champion.
Miss Corinna Seipp made the long trip up from Devon to judge the Black ring and found her champion in Susan Bridgeman’s 5yo mare Musselbrough Elida. A winner at the Breed Show last year she is a young mare with a bright future ahead of her. In Reserve was the reigning Highland Show Champion, Kerloch Rupert. Picking up the Junior honours was Donna Lochtie’s homebred 3yo filly Glendyburn Lady Devine. She is out of the big winning mare Mawcarse Lady Dionne who once again triumphed in the Broodmare class. The Novice section was won by M & E Warren’s 7yo yeld mare Mirkwood Callisto. Shown once as a 2yo before being left to mature she will be seeing much more of the ring in the next few seasons.
The Ridden classes are always popular and the winner of the Lead Rein class went on to be Ridden Champion and then Supreme of Show. Addingham Darcy and her rider Sophie Beattie showed just what it takes to win, I suppose Nicky did a good job too holding onto the end of the lead rein! Darcy is a wonderful kids pony, she has carried many difference children round the show ring over the last few years and will be taking a year out from ridden duties next year to be a mum. Reserve in the Ridden section was Grace Fraser with Northview Eboneezer. This pairing is new to affiliated shetland showing as up until late last year Eboneezer was unregistered but thanks to the determination of Pamela, Grace’s mother, they tracked down his breeder and his parents and got all of the required DNA and pieces of paper sent off for him to get his stud book number.
We had some new classes this year. Two Working Hunter classes were added to the schedule. Both were won by Bryony Mackinnon on Cochno Vincent. Bryony also won the trophy for the Best Rider under 16yo on a catch ride in the First Ridden class on M7E Warren’s Mirkwood Rainsong. The Reserve Champion rosette in the workers went to the delightful mini combination of Rossbrae Double Decker and Isabella Paul.
The Central Group’s next show will be the Youngstock Show on Saturday 9th of November at Stirling Mart. Mrs Joy Barugh is judging. Following this we have our AGM on Sunday 17th November at the King Robert Hotel, Stirling. All members are welcome to attend and as ever we always welcome new members to the Group.
